What is Biotechnology?
Biotechnology studies the cell, the building block of life. A strong understanding of how fats, carbohydrates, DNA, RNA, and proteins function enables high-quality medical research, as well as the development of groundbreaking applications in industry and agriculture.
The Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programme in Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering at Tampere University is designed for everyone who wants to develop future solutions that promote human well-being and health!
Structure of Studies
The programme is designed to be completed in five years. The first three years are devoted to a bachelor's degree, while the final two years focus on a master's degree.
Bachelor's Degree
During the bachelor's degree, students study cells at the molecular level and can pursue their personal interests by choosing elective courses that appeal to them. Students also develop strong practical laboratory skills.
Master's Degree
The master's stage of the Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering programme offers three specialisation options: bioinformatics, molecular biology, and cell technology.
- Bioinformatics applies methods from computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, and statistics to analyse biological data, such as DNA. Bioinformatics is widely used in modern biotechnological, biological, and biomedical research.
- Cell Technology provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the structure and function of cells and tissues, as well as how this knowledge can be applied in various biomedical applications. The studies cover the theoretical foundations of cell technology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Students also gain strong practical expertise in scientific methods used in the field.
- Molecular Biology provides students with extensive knowledge of biological processes at the molecular level, with a particular focus on aspects related to human biology and health. Students develop a solid theoretical understanding of the structure and function of genetic information in human cells. The programme also emphasises strong practical skills in scientific methods used in the field.
How to Apply
Students can apply to the degree programme through the Finnish joint application system, with admission based either on academic qualifications or entrance examination results. It is also possible to apply for a transfer from another university.
